Derek Popple is a chemist by day, printmaker by night. He started screenprinting in 2019 during his PhD at Cal and eventually delved into a variety of traditional techniques. He prints and monitors at Max's Garage Press in Berkeley, specializing in screenprinting, relief, and lithography. His work is process focused, with preference given to technical prints like CMYK screenprints, reduction, and multi-block relief prints. Leveraging his background in chemistry and teaching, he enjoys studying the chemical mechanisms behind a given technique, and using this insight to help others elevate their own practice.
